DJ MADZ: an interview
YP Editors
How did you first get interested in spinning and how did you get off the ground?I first began spinning in the summer of 2009. As a kid, my parents always hosted events, and I was always in charge of music. I was in charge of music for a party, and one of the guests of the event suggested that I begin to DJ. I fell in love with controling the vibe of the crowd by playing music. The day after the event, I took my life savings and bought my first set of turntables. I immediately got my first gig in LA within a week of moving there. I DJ'd a Hollywood house party at the age of 15.
So you moved to LA from Portland not too long ago, how has that adjustment been?
The best change in my life. LA is one of my favorite cities, I am so happy here. The adjustment was fairly easy, as I am familiar with the city.
What do you like most about LA?
The culture, the spirit, the diversity, and the great music scene that provides extensive opportunities.
How’s highschool been? Is it hard to handle spinning and studying?I've learned how to balance my time and prioritize both my studies and music career. High school has been awesome, but instead of going to football games on a regular basis, I'm the student who is busy working and spinning shows on friday nights.
What do you miss most about Portland, if anything?
The cold weather! And my grandmother (Peggy Wiederhorn.)
How often do you spin/work with music?
I work with music for hours daily. I am a songwriter in addition to a DJ, so my time is pretty filled up! I spin shows/events about every other weekend, it really varies from month to month, depending on what is going on.
What do you enjoy most about being a DJ? What do you least enjoy?
I love the high that comes over me when I spin. It's the most indescribable feeling in the world. One thing that I have least enjoyed is having to constantly fight for my act as a young, female, DJ. I have been put down by many men in the business who believe that they are superior to women.
So you have had the opportunity to spin for Paris Hilton, what was that like? (Be honest, were you nervous!?)
(Laughs) Paris is a close family friend, so it wasn't a big deal at all. I am used to spinning parties for celebrities and never have gotten too shaky, as I know that celebrities are just normal people like everyone else who are known for their line of work.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10?I see myself DJing, songwriting, and being an entrepreneur.
Besides spinning, what art forms would/are you pursuing?
Being an entrepreneur and songwriter.
When you are not spinning or studying, what do you do to relax?
Go out with friends, shop (I have an obsession with shoes, watches, clothes, and accessories!), travel. I don't have much down time, but I love staying busy.
Your Facebook says you are ‘married to Alie Rosenthal.’ When did you know you liked women?
It really clicked for me in 8th grade, but I think I have know all along. I came out to a close circle of friends in my first 2 years of high school, but publicly came out during the fall of 2010. I am lucky to have such an amazing family, and so lucky that my mother has always been so supportive about my sexuality! I grew up in a household where being a "lesbian" was looked at as something completely normal (as it should be). I am happier than I have ever been, and in a really amazing, healthy relationship.
Was it hard to come out? How have your friends and family reacted?
I had amazing support when I came out! I was nervous and scared at first, but I think everyone is. My good friend Justin Sylvester always told me "never tolerate hate, just be yourself, you are no different than anyone else!" I live by that quote every day. Another inspiring person who always reminded me to stay true to myself is my cousin Julie Bercthold. My hope is to empower everyone of the LGBTQ family to always stay true to themselves and be proud of who they are, and who they love!
What advice do you have for young people trying to pursue their passions in the music industry?
Always stay true to your act! Being unique is the best thing you can be! Also, networking is the key to success.
